Drug addiction or chemical dependency has become a worldwide problem respecting no barriers, whether social, economic or religious. This has serious implications for mankind since it undermines individual health, warps human relationships, torments families, cripples economies, fosters crime and destroys peace. Various therapeutic approaches have been resorted to in treating and rehabilitating addicts. The outcome is too often unsatisfactory, with the majority of addicts still trapped in attraction to relapse.

The realisation has now dawned upon addiction therapists that craving is the root cause of all addictive behaviours: chemical dependency is at root an addiction to the pleasant body sensations that arise because of the biochemical flow in the body specific to the pharmacodynamics of the drug taken. Vipassana enables an individual to eradicate this reactivity toward particular sensations and so eradicates addiction at its root.

This pamphlet is a concise overview of the problem, the solution in the form of mental purification, and how Vipassana applies.
